Andrew Bujalski follow-up to last year's Cinema Village micro hit "Funny Ha Ha," further establishes him as a observant chronicler of contemporary post-collegiate bohemian twentysomethings.
Here we find young rocker on the make, Alan (played by Justin Rice, founder of indie-rock band Bishop Allen), whose Boston-based band has just broken up, newly arrived in New York. While looking for a drummer for a show he’s already lined up, he otherwise goes about the mechanics of self-promotion. He finds a champion in Sara, a radio DJ who sets her sights on a submissive but uninterested Alan.
In his down time, Alan drinks and strategizes with his old friend Lawrence (played by Bujalski), a grad student, and Lawrence’s girlfriend Ellie, a journalist. When Ellie finds herself attracted to him, the attraction is mutual, but both parties are reluctant to take the next step.
"The wonderful independent film “Mutual Appreciation” looks like something that just came out of a time capsule, but there’s nothing dusty about it. Shot on expressively grainy black-and-white celluloid, the film has the kind of artfully artless, low-fi vibe that brings to mind the French New Wave of the late 1950’s and the East Village film scene of the late 1970’s. It’s the sort of unassuming discovery that could get lost in a crowd or suffer from too much big love, and while it won’t save or change your life, it may make your heart swell. Its aim is modest and true." Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

Completely great. Best movie I can remember seeing in a movie theater. Funny Ha Ha is very, very good but Mutual Appreciation is off the charts incredible.

A sad time in cinematic history when a film of this nature is disbursed through the channels of an otherwise great medium. Now I get it! I haven't been able to figure out why we practice suicide until just hearing that the director of Funny Ha Ha was allowed to make another film. Cinema Village, please retract from any future commitments with this dude, for the sake of humanity!!!

I enjoyed this film. I am avidly watching this new realism in film and all of the actors seem to be schooled from the same person, like Puffy Chair and this one or perhaps they aren't acting at all. Alan's smile is a delight and the romantic chemistry is so plausible I was a bit flattened at the ending. I can understand bad reviews and negative comments. That is the great thing about this style, it garnishes extreme reactions. The actor's were a delight. Great work.

This movie is so subtle, humble, and, overall, perfect, that a lot of people might miss what Bujalski is trying to do. The dialogue truly feels like that anyone-or-no-one language of youth, making you think you could know any one of the characters. Best movie I've seen this year.
